Enigma: Mystery Art Show & Auction

Do you like a good mystery? Are you, perchance, an art-lover? Do you like to mingle, and hob-nob, while miniature foods are passed around? Well! Have we got some good news for you!

This Saturday, June 29, Bangbelly will host the first annual “Enigma: Mystery Art Show + Auction” in support of Fogo Island Pride.

The show, which features artists of all ages and experience, demonstrates the many talents of Fogo Island, Change Islands and beyond. Artists from near and far have contributed a number of original pieces, now on display at the Café.

Interested buyers are invited to preview the works and place early bids leading up to the official auction on Saturday.

All artists will remain anonymous, until 9 PM the evening of the event, and the top bidder for each piece will be the first to reveal the identity of the artist.

All proceeds from Enigma go toward Fogo Island Pride, a newly established organization whose mission is to broaden awareness, and promote the acceptance and understanding of LGBTQ2+ issues in rural Newfoundland and Labrador.

The monies raised will help put into motion future initiatives for the organization, including Fogo Island’s first Pride Week, August 4 – 10, 2019.

Join us for some mystery on June 29, enjoy some light nibbles and libations and help support a great cause.

The Auction will begin at 7PM and run until 9PM, when the bidding will be called to a close.

May the Bidding Gods be with you!

Bangbelly & the Rainbow Flag: Why Pride Is So Important to Us

Here at Bangbelly Café, our mission is to provide a space where everyone feels welcomed and embraced, which is why partnering with Fogo Island Pride is so important to us.

Founded on May 14, 2019, Fogo Island Pride is dedicated to providing support to members of the Queer community and their allies in rural Newfoundland and Labrador.

The new non-profit organization encourages the acceptance of the Queer community and aims to reduce prejudice and discrimination of disenfranchised and/or otherwise marginalized groups.

This summer, Fogo Island Pride will be facilitating a series of events to celebrate LGBTQ2+ Pride, many of which Bangbelly will be helping to host.

Throughout the coming months, Bangbelly will be assisting with fundraising initiatives and showcasing events in support of Fogo Island Pride.

On June 5, we will be screening the classic comedy To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, starring Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze, and John Leguizamo. The road trip caper marks a milestone in queer representation on screen, and has become a favourite in mainstream media and with drag audiences alike.

The movie is free for all to attend, and we recommend that you do, because this movie is a can’t-miss!

At the end of the month, Bangbelly will be hosting a brand-new event: “Enigma: Mystery Art Show + Auction.”

Throughout the month of June, artists and makers of all kinds are invited to create ‘’mystery” artworks, which will be sold in support of Pride.

Beginning on Thursday June 27, Bangbelly will be pre-showing the artists’ contributions, so you have time to pick out some favourites. Then, on June 29, the anonymous works will available for sale during our silent auction.

Work from many of the island’s most talented artists and makers will be available, but no playing favourites, because you won’t know who made your piece until it has been purchased! 100% of proceeds from the event will go towards Fogo Island Pride and its initiatives.

These are just a few of the ways in which Bangbelly plans to support Fogo Island Pride. We wholeheartedly and enthusiastically support this initiative and encourage you to do the same!

Your contributions will go a long way to realizing the initiatives of Fogo Island Pride and helping to bring about real, positive change (not to mention a few fun events along the way).

After all, a message of acceptance and love is one we should all get behind.

Bangbelly Café is preparing for its inaugural Trivia Night, and we couldn’t be more excited!

Our Master of Ceremonies, Devin, has been working hard to create a series of questions that are as entertaining as they are challenging. The game will span a large range of topics, which means the more diverse your team, the better! Players of all ages are encouraged to participate.

To compliment our quiz, we have devised a special menu of pub favourites including: Chips + Queso, Veggie Flatbread, Ribs, Sausages and, of course, our fan-favourite: The Tip of the Iceburger.

Gather your team, or brave our game alone for the glory of both bragging rights and a $50 Bangbelly Gift Card.

Registration begins at 6 PM

Trivia will start at 7 PM

Make sure to come early to find a good seat because we are operating on a first-come-first-registered basis!

When you arrive, please make sure to register your team (of up to 6 people) with Devin and come up with a clever team name for a chance to win a special bonus prize!

Trivia will consist of 10 rounds of questions, with 8 questions per round. Phew! 80 whole questions? Don’t worry, we’ve got plenty of drinks and snacks for that.

And, while it should go without saying, those caught using their phones during the game will be disqualified and their teams will not be eligible to win, so we recommend “Airplane Mode.”

See you tomorrow Trivia Buffs!

Bergs & Burgers: Spring Time on Fogo Island

Here on Fogo Island, Spring is one of our favorite times of year. Not only can we get the dust off our barbecues after a long winter, we can also look forward to iceberg season once more!

Each year from May until July, Fogo Island serves as the perfect lookout for the thousands of icebergs that make their way down from western Greenland. Icebergs, for those unfamiliar, are fragments of 10,000-year-old glaciers that fall into the sea each year. After being detached from their glacier, these behemoths float around until they pass through the Davis Strait and are swept into the Labrador Current, carrying them straight south down Iceberg Alley.

In honour of our frozen visitors and grilling season alike, we have created a delicious new menu item for Spring: The ‘Tip of the Iceburger.’

Made with Newfoundland beef, white onions, bacon crumb, burger sauce, pickles, sweet grainy mustard, and served on a house-made sesame bun, our burger is the perfect compliment to your iceberg adventures.

The ‘Tip of the Iceburger’ is one of the many new items we are offering this Spring as part of our new menu, which can be viewed here.

So, why not celebrate the arrival of spring by dropping in to test out our new burg, then keep your eyes peeled for the 10,000 bergs that pass by Fogo Island each year.

What’s in a Name?

We are often asked why we named our business Bangbelly. It’s a funny sounding word, and some people even think it’s kind of… suggestive. Can you blame them?

The answer to this oft-asked question is simple. After a long brainstorming process, many almost-right names (and a few disagreements) we landed on the entry for Bangbelly in the Dictionary of Newfoundland English.

It was perfect.

Here’s what we read:

bangbelly n Cp N & Q ([1914] 1940) 22 June, p. 434 W. A pudding, cake or pancake, originally prepared by fishermen and men in the woods, made with flour, fat pork, etc, and boiled, baked or fried, now usu served as dessert; also attrib.
1896 J A Folklore ix, 35 ~ a low and coarse word denoting a boiled pudding consisting of flour, molasses, soda, etc, and not uncommonly seal-fat instead of suet. 1937 DEVINE 7 Bangbellies. Pancakes made of flour, fat and molasses, fried on a pan. 1939 DULEY 17 In the winter the stomach was frequently filled with the bulk of pea-soup floating with fat white bang-bellies. [1894-1929] [1960 BURKE] (ed White) 41 “McGinnis at the Rink”: And his bullseyes were plastered all over his face / Like the whorts in a bang-belly pie. T 96-642 You can make up the bangbelly with bread soda and flour, mix it together and fat pork in it, cut it into squares; it’s lovely. C 69-10 To make bangbelly you put blueberries, sugar and hot water in a pot and add a pinch of salt. When it begins to boil you drop in doughballs and let it continue boiling until the doughballs are cooked and the blueberries are thick. Serve it hot. 1973 BARBOUR 47 [Tea] consisted of a slice of molasses bread, raisin buns, pork toutons, or bang-belly.

So, it can be many things. And everyone we talk to has their own understanding of, and some even their own recipe for, Bangbelly. This we like.

As Newfoundlanders-By-Choice (a.k.a CFAs) we often have our own take on traditional Fogo Island fare. Bangbelly just so happens to be one of those dishes.

If you’ve yet to try Bangbelly, we highly recommend a visit around breakfast time, when you can try our “Chitty Chitty Bangbelly”, which comes with mustard pickle, two poached eggs, and a warm kale salad. Yes Please!
